Families with Premature Infants Who Ingested Formula

In severe NEC cases, the complete destruction of intestine tissue can result in severe infection and, in many cases, death.

A 2014 study found a 320% greater risk of developing NEC in extremely premature infants if they were fed cow’s-milk based formula or milk fortifier.

Even though studies have indicated an exclusive human milk-based diet may decrease the risk of NEC, traditional formula companies failed to warn about the potential impact.
